ALIMOSHO, LAGOS – The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has reiterated his warning to residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, saying the council will intensify enforcement and public awareness to curb the growing environmental challenge across the local government.
The chairman gave the warning on Saturday while leading the council’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, during which refuse was evacuated from several black spots with the support of residents, community leaders and members of the council’s management team.
The exercise, which featured the deployment of the council’s compactors and other sanitation equipment, targeted strategic locations where illegal waste disposal has continued to pose environmental and public health concerns.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Akinpelu said the council would not relent in its efforts to tackle environmental degradation, stressing that residents also have a responsibility to keep their surroundings clean.
He warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorised locations endangers public health, blocks drainage channels and undermines the council’s sanitation efforts.
“Residents must understand that indiscriminate waste disposal poses serious health and environmental risks. We encourage everyone to utilise approved waste collection channels and support government efforts towards achieving a cleaner Alimosho,” the chairman said.
He added that the council would continue to combine sustained public enlightenment with enforcement measures to discourage environmental offenders and promote proper waste management practices.
Residents, who participated in the sanitation exercise, described the initiative as timely, noting that regular clean-up exercises and stricter compliance with environmental laws would help improve hygiene and reduce flooding and disease outbreaks in communities across Alimosho.
The monthly sanitation exercise is part of the local government’s broader commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment through active community participation and responsible waste disposal.
