Passion, courage, hardwork and dedication are some of the key ingredients students need to be prosperous in any chosen career.
This was the thrust of the message by various professionals at the Career Day Programme organised by the management of Orisunbare Senior High School, Ayobo, Lagos State, on Thursday 27 February, 2020.
The professionals guided the students on some of the subject areas they need to focus on, in their chosen careers, skills as well as the qualities they must have to succeed.
The school principal, Mr. Abidemi Ogunode, who was represented by the Vice Principal (Administration) Mrs B.M Olorunfemi, said the programme, with the theme, ‘Career, gateway to greater achievements,’ was meant to guide the students to make good career choices.
He encouraged the students to be attentive in order to gain from the wealth of experience shared by the experts drawn from the Media, Legal, Medical, Teaching and Engineering professions.
Mr Sulaimon Alamutu of the Voice of Nigeria highlighted what it takes to build a career in the media profession.
While encouraging the students to take to the media profession because of the crucial role it plays in the society, Alamutu identified writing, language, listening and computer skills as some of the skills they need to flourish.
He itemized some of the requisite qualities the students must have to include confidence, integrity, alertness and importantly, fear of God.
Alamutu also educated the students about the unbundling of Mass Communication into seven different courses, which include Journalism & Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising, Film & Multimedia Studies, Broadcasting, Development Communication and Information and Media Studies.
He exposed them to the various aspects of the media they can work, the opportunities available as well as the risks involved.
A Medical Doctor, Salaudeen Sodiq, said the decision to read medicine should come from the mind and not influenced by peer group or parents.
He explained that any intending medical student must be ready to study for longer hours and avoid bad conducts like drug abuse, street violence, indecent dressing and cultism.
Dr Salaudeen noted that a medical doctor must have empathy and share the feelings of his patients.
Other professionals like Barr. Kunbi Jolaade, Eng. Taofik Agboola, Nurse Olowoopejo, Counsellor Ola Kazeem and Teacher Rotimi Ayeni, shared experiences with the students as they relate to their respective fields.
The event was spiced up with a drama presentation by the students which centred on the importance of education and the impact of teachers.
The students also thrilled the audience to choreography display and talent show.
The event was facilitated by the school Counsellor, Mrs. Durojaiye Khadijat.
