The Alimosho Local Government Chapter of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, has been inaugurated.
The Council has a mandate to ensure religious harmony and tolerance in the local government.
The council is also expected to resolve conflicts and disputes among religious groups in the local government.
Inaugurating the members of the NIREC at the council secretariat in Akowonjo, the Chairman, Hon. Jelili Sulaimon, said the NIREC should strive to make unity, peace, love and progress possible and visible in Alimosho Local Government.
He explained that NIREC is expected to cultivate the culture of respect for human dignity, peaceful co-existence and religious freedom by Preventing and managing conflicts.
“By monitoring and identifying potential hot spots for brewing religious intolerance and violence. Supporting people that are marginalized because of their religious identity through advocacy and capacity building. Investigating and reporting on religious tension to legitimate organs of government for proactive measures.”
Hon. Sulaimon also urged the inaugurated members to work harmoniously to sustain the peaceful religious atmosphere in the local government.
In their respective remarks, the co-chairmen of the council, Alhaji Musa Busairi and Rev Samuel Samuel Owoseni, pledged to work together to achieve the mandates of the NIREC.
They also called for support from residents to make their assignments easy.
Also speaking, the HOE of the LG, Mr Abayomi Oluwatoyin, said the task ahead of the NIREC was enormous, adding that the members should take it seriously.
Similarly, the chairman used the occasion to charge the religious leaders on the need to sensitize their members on getting their permanent voters card, PVC, ahead of the election.
He also appealed that they should help inform the public to pay their tariffs and rates to the local government so that more social amenities could be provided for the people.
