The Chairman of Ayobo Ipaja Local Council Development Area and his Alimosho Local Government counterpart have commended workers for their contributions to the socio-economic development of the society.
In separate messages to commemorate the 2020 International Workers’ Day, the local government Chairmen said they recognized the uncommon sacrifices, patriotism and dedication of the workers to duty.
They also commended the healthworkers at the frontline of the battle against the Covid 19 pandemic.
The chairman of Ayobo Ipaja LCDA, Mr Yusuf Sakiru said, “We acknowledge and celebrate your patriotism and uncommon spirit in being a ladder to the socio-economic development of our Society. Many times you have exceeded the limit of duty calls, we salute you all.
“Those at the front lines, health care workers, Civil Servants and other categories, we salute your courage and enterprise and our prayers are with you, as you battle to rid our society of this raging virus.
“To all workers in Ayobo Ipaja LCDA, this is a special day for you, my thoughts are with you. Your patriotism and dedication to work is uncommon, I wish us many more MAY DAY in good health.”
On his part, the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Mr Jelili Sulaimon, said that as the world is faced with an unusual pandemic which threatens human existence, no other set of people has given humanity hope than the workers.
“We recognize the sacrifice constantly made by our frontline workers, the health workers, security personnel, environment staff, press men, top officials and all those striving daily to bring to end this unwanted pandemic,” he said.
Mr Sulaimon said his administration would continue to support the workers with training, moral and welfare packages.
“This is a time to upgrade our self with soft skills. As we sit at home during this period, let us engage in developing ourselves with various online courses.”
In a similar vein, the Lagos State Area Unit of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, MSSN, has urged the government to prioritise provision of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers in the front line of the battle against the Covid 19 pandemic in Nigeria.
The call comes as reports have revealed that more of these healthcare workers are now becoming victims of the virus in line of duty.
In a statement to commemorate the 2020 Workers Day, the president of the students’ body, Dr Saheed Ashafa lauded Nigerian workers for their resilience despite the tough conditions being experienced in the last couple of months.
“Although we are currently experiencing a tough period, the last one year has recorded success for the Labour Union,’ he said.
According to Dr.Ashafa, “it is against this unique patriotism that the students’ society urged the Nigerian government to place priority on the provision of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required for the front line healthcare workers.”
He stated, “We particularly acknowledge the rare sacrifice of our healthcare workers facing the heavy demands of the pandemic coronavirus with uncommon doggedness.”
The students’ leader, who is currently leading a Covid-19 Incident Volunteers team in Lagos, tasked the government to pay special attention to the private sectors for protection of workers’ welfare, noting that necessary palliative should be rendered to ensure job security at the sector.
He bemoaned a situation where employers are left to sack their employees arbitrarily, as he noted that it will leave the country with huge negative consequences.
