MSSN sensitises youths on home safety, accident prevention

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, Ayobo-Ipaja Area Council, has emphasised the need for youths and other members of the society to prioritise safety and prevent accidents at home.

This was the focus at the group’s Special Quarterly Usrah held at the Ibrahim Al-Hassan Memorial Mosque, Ipaja, on Friday, 6th December, 2024.

Youths, especially, secondary school students from various schools across Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area, attended the special programme.

In a welcome address, the Amir of the society, Mr. Ismail Hamzah, said accidents within homes have now become an issue of great concern, with several cases recorded lately.

“Hence, we felt the need to address the issue in a bid to ensure the safety of our members and their families,” he said.

The Guest Speaker, Mr. Abdul-Hakeem Mukhtar, a Quality, Health, Safety, Sustainability and Environment expert, stressed the essence of know-how in safety and emergency management.

In case of fire emergency, Mukhtar explained that it was necessary to use the suitable extinguisher for every fire, as the wrong might not quell it.

“There are different types of fire, depending on their causes, and we have different types of fire extinguisher. So, you have to use the suitable extinguisher for every fire. The wrong one might fail to quell the fire or worsen it. One has to be very careful in such situations.”

He mentioned some precautions to be taken in case of any fire occurrence.

“Fire can break out anywhere. It does in the kitchen when our mummies cook. They quench it by covering the pots. They starve the fire of the oxygen it needs to burn. We all need to take some precautions. Always back the exit whenever you try to put out fire, and in case of fall or demolition, make sure you hold on to the pillars in the building,” explained.

He added, “in case of emergency, if you don’t know the right thing to do, please run to a muster point. Don’t take any action that might aggravate the situation.”

The high point of the programme was the practical session, where he taught the attendees how to put out fire using the extinguisher.

Many students who attended expressed great delight. They described the sensitisation as timely and noted that it would help prevent avoidable emergencies.
