Healthy Communities Begin with Awareness

LAGOS, NIGERIA – Every healthy community is built on informed and responsible citizens. As the world commemorates World Hepatitis Day 2026, Community Standard News calls on Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), religious bodies, youth groups, market associations, schools and other grassroots institutions to intensify awareness about viral hepatitis.

Hepatitis is often described as a silent disease because many infected people show no symptoms until serious liver damage has occurred. Yet, with early testing, vaccination, timely treatment and sustained public education, countless lives can be saved.

The fight against hepatitis cannot be left to governments and healthcare professionals alone. “Grassroots organisations are the closest to the people and are uniquely positioned to educate residents, encourage regular screening, promote vaccination and challenge the myths and stigma surrounding the disease.”

Community media also has a critical responsibility. By giving voice to local health concerns, sharing accurate information and amplifying community-led initiatives, the media can inspire behavioural change and encourage healthier lifestyles.

At Community Standard News, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting healthier, safer and more resilient communities.

We stand ready to amplify the voices of residents, community associations, healthcare workers, civil society organisations and other stakeholders working to eliminate viral hepatitis and improve public health.

“On this World Hepatitis Day, let every community become a centre of awareness, every neighbourhood a place of prevention, and every resident an ambassador for healthier living.”

Together, we can build healthier communities, one informed citizen at a time.
