The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, (MSSN Lagos), has urged Nigerian youths to embrace honesty, discipline and hard work, saying true success is built on integrity, not shortcuts.
The faith-based students’ body said, while the current economic challenges in Nigeria may contribute to frustration among young people, such can never justify criminal behaviours.
The Society said these during its inaugural press briefing held on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, to usher in a new leadership for the organization.
The new Amir of the Society, Dr. Ajibola Yusuf Salami, said the prevalence of crimes like internet fraud, drug abuse, gambling, examination malpractice and other social vices among segments of the youth population should concern every stakeholder.
He noted that a nation’s development cannot be separated from the values upheld by its people.
MSSN Lagos, according to him, remained guided by principles that promote justice, responsibility and positive contribution to the society.
“At a time of significant national challenges and opportunities, MSSN Lagos remains optimistic about the future of Nigeria and its youth population.
“We call on students and young people to remain steadfast, pursue knowledge, develop valuable skills, uphold noble character and contribute positively to their communities,” he said.
The MSSN Lagos also used the media briefing to address some issues affecting national development.
Sanctity of human life, top priority in Islam
On the current insecurity, the student body said terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes are grave offences that contradict the teachings of Islam and the values of every civilized society, stressing that “Islam places the sanctity of human life among the highest objectives of the Shariah.”
“The Holy Qur’an is explicit on this matter. In Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:32), Allah (SWT) declares: “Whoever kills a soul unless for a slain soul or for corruption in the land, it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. ”Banditry, kidnapping and terrorism are among the gravest forms of corruption on earth, and Islam leaves no room for ambiguity in condemning them.
“The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) further warned in an authentic Hadith: “A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.”
“Those who terrorise communities, abduct innocent people and shed blood in pursuit of unlawful gain have departed entirely from the teachings of our faith.
“Kidnapping for ransom, attacks on communities destruction of livelihoods and the terrorization of innocent citizens are not only crimes against the state but also crimes against humanity and violations of divine injunctions.”
While condemning the crimes, MSSNLagos believes that Nigeria must move beyond condemnation towards decisive and sustainable solutions.
It, therefore, recommended the establishment of Special Anti-Kidnapping, Terrorism and Banditry Courts to fast-track prosecution of arrested suspects.
It also advocate the imposition of maximum penalties provided by law, including capital punishment where legally applicable, for convicted kidnappers, terrorists and bandits whose actions result in loss of lives and widespread terror.
The body called for enhanced protection of schools, campuses and student communities, while also advising the government to prioritize Increased deployment of technology-driven security systems.
Dr. Salami noted that Nigeria cannot develop in an atmosphere of fear, adding that “Security must remain a national priority, and all stakeholders must work collectively to restore public confidence and safeguard lives and property.”
National interest above partisan considerations
On the 2027 general election, the students organization charged political leaders and stakeholders to place national interest above partisan considerations, saying “Nigeria deserves elections that are peaceful, transparent, credible and reflective of the genuine will of the people.”
“We urge political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid rhetoric capable of inflaming tensions or deepening divisions.
“We also encourage eligible students and youths to participate actively in the democratic process through voter registration, civic engagement and responsible political participation.
“The future of Nigeria will not be shaped by apathy but by informed and responsible citizenship.”
