The deceased Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, Babatunde Oke, did not die of Covid 19 complications as widely reported.
Rather he died “after brief ilness.”
This is according to the Chief Press Secretary to the late LCDA boss, Ishmaeel Akerele.
The Vanguard newspaper had reported, citing an anonymous source, that Oke, who contracted COVID-19 recently, was receiving treatment at the Gbagada Isolation Centre until his case became critical and he had to be moved to St. Nicholas Hospital where he died early this morning.
“A senior official of the council who preferred anonymity confirmed the death, saying, “We lost our chairman to the cold hand of death this morning (Wednesday) due to COVID-19 complications. It’s so sad,” the paper reported.
But Akerele, in a statement seen by Community Standard, denied the Covid 19 narrative, describing it as a “rumour.”
“Sequel to the widespread rumour that Hon. Babatunde Oke died of COVID-19 complications, I wish to state emphatically that the former executive chairman of Onigbongbo LCDA died after a brief illness.
“While we reflect on the passing of a great leader and astute politician, rumour mongers must not use this medium to distract his immediate families and political associates from the peaceful mourning the late Hon. Babatunde Oke deserves.”
Mr Oke died in the early hours of Wednesday (today).
