The Ayobo Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has announced plan to immediately commence a comprehensive data capture and registration exercise for all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators within the LCDA.
This was the major outcome of a high-level security meeting held by the Chairman, Hon. Agbaje Lukmon, with leaders of commercial transport unions and key security stakeholders operating within the Council.
The meeting brought together principal government officials, law enforcement agencies, and union executives to deliberate on practical measures aimed at enhancing security, improving accountability, and promoting public safety throughout the LCDA.
Those in attendance included Hon. Ahmad Adeyinka Yusuf, Council Secretary (SLG); Hon. Titi Jeje, Special Adviser on Media and Information; SP Yemisi, Divisional Police Officer, Ayobo Division; SP Ovwigho, Divisional Police Officer, Ipaja Division; national union leaders; and other critical security stakeholders.
Under the new security framework, all Okada and Keke parks and operational locations across the LCDA will be officially documented.
Every duly verified operator will receive an official identification jacket bearing a unique coded number to facilitate easy identification and monitoring.
A mandatory guarantor system will also be introduced to strengthen accountability, ensuring that every registered rider has a verifiable guarantor who can be contacted whenever necessary.
Hon. Agbaje expressed concern over the increasing influx of commercial motorcycle (Okada) and tricycle (Keke) operators into the LCDA without proper documentation or profiling.
He said that the absence of reliable records poses significant security challenges and could provide opportunities for criminal elements to infiltrate communities under the guise of commercial transportation.
The Chairman said security is best achieved through preventive measures, emphasizing that effective profiling and documentation remain essential tools in safeguarding residents and protecting the Council from emerging security threats.
He said that these new measures are designed not only to improve security coordination but also to protect law-abiding commercial operators while discouraging criminal activities within the Council.
The Divisional Police Officers of Ayobo and Ipaja Commands commended the initiative, describing it as a timely and commendable step towards strengthening community policing.
They reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to work closely with the Council in ensuring full compliance and sustaining peace and public order.
The Media Aide to the Chairman, Amuwa Mayowa, in a statement, said leaders of the various transport unions at the meeting also welcomed the initiative, noting that proper documentation would distinguish genuine operators from criminal elements, enhance public confidence, and promote a safer working environment for commercial transporters.
The new initiative is in partnership with security agencies and transport unions, and aligns with the broader security agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Lagos State Government.
