Residents of Akowonjo in Alimosho Local Government area have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu to mobilize contractors back to the construction of drainage system within the communities.
The call came as the early morning showers in the state today left the residents, particularly those residing at Irepodun, Ige, Olalabi and Akinpelu streets in a pool of flood water that hindered both human and vehicular movements.
It was hectic time for some of the residents going to their various work places as they were seen navigating the dirty flood water cautiously to avoid falling into the drainage.
The flooding problem is a result of the improper drainage system constructed by Lagos State Government.
Though the drainage project is ongoing, reliable sources informed Community Standard that the contractor in charge abandoned the site because he has not been paid in recent time.
“This project should have been completed before the commencement of the raining season but because of government bureaucracies it was not possible. This has left the residents to bear the brunt of an unbearable deluge that has become an annual disaster for Akowonjo community in the last 30yrs,” a source said.
Part of the drainage system network was constructed during the first tenure of former Governor Babatunde Fashola which drastically reduced flooding problem within the communities.
However, the drainage system was not linked to the main channel that will discharge the waste water out of the vicinity.
