Staff and students of Muhibah Memorial School, Egbeda last Friday embarked on community development exercise by filling up potholes on God’s Love street, close to their school.
Kitted in their Friday wears with reflective jackets to match, the students, with the assistance and supervision of their teachers, used the debris from the ongoing constructions in their school to fill up potholes that have made vehicular movement very difficult in the neighborhood.
A major concern across Lagos state presently is the deplorable condition of roads, especially the inner ones.
Alimosho has many of these bad roads in abundance, and residence lament endlessly with no sucour in sight from the authorities.
The Proprietress of the School, Mrs Hauwa Olaide Taiwo, said the exercise was part of the school’s corporate social responsibility.
According to her, instead of wasting those debris, the management thought it wise to put it to beneficial use for the community.
“We believe in giving back to the society where we operate. And this exercise is one of those things, even though it’s little,’ she said.
Ordinarily, the expectation would have been that the job would be contracted out but that was not the case.
The school’s Head Teacher, Mr Misbaudeen Yusuf, explains why.
“You can see that our students were fully involved. This is meant to inculcate the spirit of community service in them, to let them know that they have a role to play in the development of the community they live in.”
Residents of the street expressed appreciation to the school for the effort.
